Loiza is a Sato from Puerto Rico adopted two years ago. She had spent most of her puppy life as a stray roaming the beaches of Salinas, Puerto Rico. She still loves the beach, but now she goes sailing every summer in Long Island with her two moms who also love the beach and adore Loiza.
Shameless Stray from the Heart Plug
This sweetheart of a dog came from the The Save A Sato Foundation and a joint project with Stray from the Heart. It was very similar to our Canine Amigo project. Read an article about this project and the Save a Satos Foundation from the Daily News (”A ‘little’ love from P.R.” written by Amy Sacks). Animal Planet aired the Sato documentary on ” Wild Rescues”. A video copy of “Satos-The Stray Dogs of Puerto Rico” produced by the AHA may be purchased for $10 by calling 1-866-242-1877.

LETTER FROM HOME:
I just wanted to take this time to give you an update on our sweet boy Dino… It has taken time (which was to be expected), but Dino opens up more and more every day. After I spoke with you a couple of weeks ago, worried that Dino didn’t have a voice, he barked the very next day! My husband was outside while Dino and I sat on the living room couch. Oliver (hubby) decided to peek through the window at us. Dino was not expecting this (nor I) and he growled and barked at him. We were soooo proud of him! It is so pleasant to have a dog that is not a yapper, but it is quite comforting to know that he is a protector.
Dino and Bridget are two peas in a pod. They love to hike, sleep and eat together. They give each other kisses in the morning and Bridget loves to nip at his muzzle to get him to play. My husband and I are thrilled to see Dino become a part of our family each and every day. He loves a nice belly rub…actually he loves any contact whatsoever. If you stop petting him, he nudges your hand and makes you pet him. He also will put his paw on your lap or face if he wants to be extra cute! I think his favorite thing to do though is to follow me EVERYWHERE I go. He is my adorable shadow:)

Dino loves to ride in the car. He knows that this means we are going for a nice hike. I can’t wait until Thanksgiving when we drive to Michigan. Everyone is excited to meet our new baby boy. I recently took Dino and Bridget to Barktoberfest in Putnam Valley and was relieved to know that Dino is good with new dogs, adults and children. Dino is still shy, don’t get me wrong, but he is never ever agressive. I am completely confident with Dino around children which is a relief since we plan on having some ourselves someday. The kids and adults thought Dino had the perfect temperament (Bridget too). He just sat there and let everyone pet him. I guess he didn’t have much to complain about.

Anyway, thank you for bringing Dino into our lives. He makes us smile every day:) I don’t know what we would do without him. We no longer have our apartment in the city, so you must come visit us in the country one day.
Sincerely,
Pyul, Oliver & Bridget

It is an all too familiar story: a beautiful young Border Collie Mix lay bleeding and motionless after being struck by a car on a street in Ecuador. Her hip is fractured, leg is broken, paws are bruised. Her survival is unlikely.
Then her guardian angel appears! Linda Del Pup is the co-founder of the Quito, Ecuador-based Amigo Fiel Foundation, an organization that aims to find homes for the country’s neglected and unwanted dogs, dogs who would otherwise have only a slim chance of survival. Informed
by a friend of the dog’s condition, Linda wastes no time in rushing to the
dog’s aid.
Partnering with Stray From the Heart, Linda arranged for “Luisa? to relocate to New York and undergo surgery to repair both her hip and leg. Six months later Luisa was well on the road to a full recovery.
Luisa’s new owner, Corey, reports that Luisa is doing extremely well.
She loves to go for long walks and learned to walk beautifully on a leash. She is also friendly with other dogs and children.
“I can’t even tell you how amazing she is. She is blossoming and slowly coming out of her shyness,? Corey informs us. “Please send my thanks to everyone in Ecuador for loving Luisa, bringing her back to health and making her journey to NYC possible.?
Thanks to Linda and the good works of Stray From the Heart, Luisa is better than ever and thriving in her new home.
LETTER FROM HOME
Just wanted to give you a little update on how well Luisa is doing. She’s doing really well in general, we feel so lucky to have such a fantastic dog. She is totally paper trained, she walks beautifully on a leash, friendly to other dogs & children.

I can’t even tell you how amazing she is. She is blossoming, and is slowly coming out of her shyness, loves to cuddle in bed and go for long walks.
Please send my thanks to everyone in Ecuador for loving Luisa, and bringing her back to health and making her journey to NYC possible.
With all my love,
Corey

Daisy is the three legged dog, and the very first dog we brought from Ecuador (see ecuador.strayfromtheheart.org). Her hip got seriously infected by a huge mass that grew in the area where she had been originally amputated and she has struggled with illness, but know her life is like the fresh wildflower she is named after!
LETTER FROM HOME
Daisy is doing wonderfully- she just chased the poor UPS guy out the door (I guess she knew the package he had didn’t contain any stuffed lobster toys for her or anything) and she is back to her playful (overly at times) self. She is down to 2 pain pills a day- I don’t know if she even still needs them, I just feel like she should take them. I am weaning her down because I don’t know if she’ll have withdrawal or anything. So far she hasn’t shown any sign of phantom limb pain. She’s very snuggly with the baby as you can see. Her and Isaac are very good friends- they play together and sometimes sleep together but usually just sit on either side of me on the couch or on the bed.

She is very much back to her old self- no signs of any infection- she’s about as anti lethargic as you can be, and her appetite is back full force. She’s able to get up and down the deck stairs to the yard without any hesitation and though she still prefers to be carried up longer stairs (and I feel better carrying her too) she really seems to be healing very well..
She gets her stitches out tomorrow- I am going to ask the vets if she should keep the E Collar on longer or if I should just put her striped sweater (the one she arrived in!) on to distract her from eating the leg bit. I have a feeling she will remain “Coney” for awhile.

Oh, and I’d already signed the No Dogs For Dinner petition- I get those emails at all 3 email addresses and always send them to everyone in my address book! I met a nice lady at the convenience store today who has an adopted 14 year old chihuahua mix with snaggle teeth and a messed up ear. She rescued her from neglectful owners. We commended each other on our respective rescues and talked about how we just wish we had more money and more room and more time- to take in even more rescues. I talk about Stray From the Heart at work all the time- I’ve saved it in all 4 computer’s bookmarks so people can go and look for potential adoptees….
Hope you’re doing well- Again thank you so much for … all the wonderful work you do for so many (now) lucky dogs. You are one of the only true heroes I’ve ever met, and I’m honored that you chose Jerrett and me to be Daisy’s new family.
Sincerely-
Tara and Jerret, Eliza and Daisy, Isaac and Bernadette and Simon.

We did it! Stray form the Heart’s 1st annual Spring Fling 2008 was a resounding success due to your generous contributions and support! This event was dedicated to the Ecua-dogs and proceeds are going toward the shelter fund.
It was a fun filled night of music from the incredible Baldwin Drive, photos and artistry from Nina Chiofalo, kind and caring words from Roberta Flack, free signed copies of Nikki Moustaki’s latest work Dogfessions and so much more!
Angel of the Airwaves, Maria Milito made a ‘cutting it close’ entrance just in time to accept her honoree award of a beautiful silver charm with a dedication from Stray form the Heart. She thanked Stray from the Heart for all the hard work done to save the dogs and made sure to let everyone know that they all could make a difference to all animals with little things each day.
Toni Bodon, Stray from the Heart’s executive director and co-founder, spoke about the continuing projects here and abroad and how many lives were saved in the last year due to a collective group of caring souls who have committed themselves to working under horrific conditions to help animals in Latin America and beyond and the wonderful people like yourselves who make that good work possible. She mentioned the brilliant new homes some of the saved dogs have gone to through the globe and how happy hey are now living lives that would otherwise have been completely out of their reach.
Nina Chiofalo had tears in her eyes as she took the award and flowers from Stray from the Heart’s very own Beth Silberg (co-founder and president) and mentioned how appreciative and happy she was to be a part of something so wonderful and meaningful as the organization and what it does to help the dogs.
Ms. Roberta Flack also teared up when speaking about her love and respect for everything Stray does for the animals and and joked admiringly recalling how she first met Beth in Central Park years prior.
Prince Lorenzo Borghese was there for the festivities and donated his brilliant line of Royal Treatment Pet Spa products that were eagerly bid on by a multitude of people in our silent auction and helped us make of $1700 from that alone!
We were also blessed to have Jacqueline Weinberger and her cover dog for New York Tails latest issue Benjamin join us as our very special celebrity guest pup stand-in for Bella who could not make the event due to a secret mission she is currently on and out of the country (although her wonderful husband Steve was there in her place). Jackie spoke for a few minutes on how amazing it is to have a rescue dog (which Benjamin the Bassett Hound happens to be) and how more people need to give these great dogs a chance!
We even had some surprising guests, such as the Harrison Forbes of Pet Talk with Harrison Forbes & the resident pet expert for the Regis and Kelly show. Harrison, an animal behaviorist for over 20 years, with an extensive and fascinating background in police dog training in the US, and abroad. Forbes’ award-winning radio show “Pet Talk” can be heard on Newstalk 1260am in LA and 540am in San Diego, but will begin nationally syndicating PET TALK WITH HARRISON FORBES on Saturday, 21 June 2008.
We also had an amazing group of volunteers who went above and beyond for the evening and are truly thee heart and soul of Stray from the Heart. Without them this event would have never been able to be achieved! We cant begin to tell you how happy we all are over all the hard work and amazing effort you have put out for the pups! Stray from the Heart is blessed to have you all a part of this family of animal advocates.

We lost 5 in total… but the rest are ok and the last are on their way! Thanks to all of you who care so much! More details to follow

Hi all, Pepita, Buddy, Camila and Matilda arrived at La Guardia on the 26th. Pyul, who adopted Dino from Ecuador last year and is a great supporter, volunteer and sponsor of our upcoming May 23rd Spring Fling, is fostering our sweet and gentle Pepita who last night was invited to sleep with Pyul and her husband Oliver, as well as with Dino and Bridget, their sweet female terrier mix. Pepita is a Senior dog who needs a very special home with a yard. She loves people, dogs and cats!
Buddy went to a fantastic foster home with Nikole, our newest foster volunteer who is doing an awesome job with socializing and housetraining. She too invited Buddy to sleep with her last night and reports that Buddy is doing great indoors and outdoors. Nikole sent pictures already which will soon be posted here on our blog.
Camila struck gold with Santa and Anthony, a very caring and loving family from Staten Island where Camila will have access a huge fenced-in yard and home cooked meals! She has already explored the entire yard and has figured out that the yard is where she should be doing it. Santa will soon send us pictures of Camila in her new home.
Matilda found her forever home with Kat who shares a home in New Jersey with her boyfriend George.
Thank you all for your support!
