When Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast last year on August 29, many evacuees were faced with a horrifying choice: abandon your animals and live, or stay together and face life-threatening risk. On Sunday June 11 we will be just a few short months away from the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Katrina took the lives of thousands of animals. Let's ensure that we prevent a second disaster of that magnitude. Congress is considering a bill that would create better rescue plans for companion animals in disasters. The Pet Evactuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act) is currently being debated in Congress and we must make sure it passes before the next hurricane season. Let's ensure that pets are included in future disaster plans.
